Description

This is a beautiful traditional handwoven Kente cloth from Bonwire, Ghana. It is full of vibrant colors, 100% cotton, to suit every style! Kente cloth which is a type of silk and cotton fabric made of interwoven cloth strips is the royal and sacred cloth of the Ashantis in the Republic of Ghana. It is a unisex adult cloth and worn in times of extreme importance. The men's cloth is larger than that of the women. This prestigious cloth is worn during important functions like Engagements, Weddings, Graduations and any other important event.

Kente weaving originated from Bonwire, a kente clothing weaving village in Ejisu-Juaben Municipal district in the Ashanti Region of Ghana. In the past, Asante Kente cloth was worn primarily by kings and high-ranking chiefs, but overtime, the use of kente became widespread and now worn by any person. Due to its significance, it has been adopted by people in Ivory Coast and many other West African countries.

The icon of African cultural heritage, Asante kente is well noted for its dazzling, multicolored patterns of vibrant colours, geometric shapes and bold designs. It is the best known of all African textiles. The names of the cloth are derived from several sources including important historical events, proverbs, important chiefs, queen mothers and plants.

The fabric can be used for all types of crafts and dress making for both causal and special occasion. The fabric in the picture is made of cotton and is in 3 pieces. Each piece is 2 yards, making 6 yards in all. Each piece measures 64 inches long x 42 inches wide.
